Routine Medications

For your oral procedure to be completed with the least amount of risk, it is important for you to inform us of your current medications, including what kinds, how much, and how it is adminstered. The amount of each drug is shown on your prescription bottle, as well as how it is to be taken.  This information can give the doctors an indication of the severity of your medical condition.  Please bring a list of your medications, dosage, and frequency when you visit us.

RECENT SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION HAS RECEIVED MEDIA EXPOSURE REGARDING A GROUP OF MEDICATIONS THAT ARE USED BY MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.  THIS GROUP OF DRUGS IS USED TO TREAT A VARIETY OF BONE CANCERS AND BONE DEGENERATION (OSTEOPOROSIS)

Bisphosphonates (Zometa, Aredia, Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva)

Zometa and Aredia are given via IV as chemotherapy.  Fosamax, Actonel, and Boniva are given orally for osteoporosis and have a much lower risk associated with them.  The current estimated risk of complication is 0.5%.  The drugs interfere with the breakdown of bone to prevent or control diseases.  Unfortunately, they can affect the jaw with slow healing following oral surgery, particularly the removal of teeth. This has recently been called OSTEONECROSIS OF THE JAW. Be sure you tell the doctors if you have taken or are taking any of these medications.
